Flaw detection is the process of identifying and sizing sub-surface defects in materials. One of the most common techniques to identify defects is ultrasonic inspection where sound waves, propagated through the material, are used to identify such anomalies. The high frequency sound behaves predictably when interacting with surfaces and internal defects.

Flaw detection can be applied in almost any industry from composites and metals used in aerospace, to petrochemical oil and gas pipelines and storage tanks, to power generation including nuclear power. The most common anomalies detected include cracks, voids and porosity in metals, ceramics and plastics in addition to delaminations and disbonds in composites.

Options for Comfortable Navigation

In order to accommodate different user needs and preferences, the EPOCH 650 is available in two hardware configurations: 

Knob

The adjustment knob on the EPOCH 650 is used along with the CHECK and ESC keys to adjust parameter values in either coarse or fine increments. You have the ability to lock the knob to prevent accidental parameter value changes during an inspection. This configuration provides smooth value slewing for customers who prefer adjusting parameters using a knob. The knob configuration is designed to meet the requirements of IP66.

Navigation Pad

The EPOCH 650 navigation pad is a hallmark feature of the EPOCH flaw detectors. The up and down arrows on the navigation pad are used for coarse parameter adjustment, and the left and right arrows for fine adjustment. The navigation pad also contains additional functions and frequently used parameters such as gain, save, and the CHECK and ESC keys. The navigation pad configuration is designed to meet the requirements of IP67.

When reading from the BNC connector, the instrument features automatic internal balancing for hassle-free operation.

The 16-way LEMO connector also supports the PowerLink NORTEC technology, which features automatic probe recognition and instrument presets for quicker setups.

Largest Viewable A-Scan  Display in its Class
• An important improvement in the Krautkramer USM 36 is  its large 7 inch screen, with an 800x480 pixel resolution. The entire area is available to display crispy A-scans, making  it the best in its class. Signals can be easily viewed and accurately interpreted, even in bright sunlight, with tired eyes at the end of a long working day. 
 
Flexible Data Reporting  and Storage 
• As well as easy-to-interpret the crispy A-scans, data reporting on the Krautkramer USM 36 can also include screen shots and A-scan videos, where A-scans can be recorded for subsequent analysis or to provide proof of inspection. All data is stored on a removable SD-card and reports can be in jpeg or BMP format.
 
Simple and Efficient Operation

• The Krautkramer USM 36 is fully protected against dust and water ingress to IP66 and can be operated in ambient temperatures from -10°C to 55°C. It can be used in sandy deserts, frozen wastes and in the humid tropics

Corrosion measurement can be carried out using dual element probes, where the screen displays both the thickness measurement and the A-scan, ensuring maximum reliability. A minimum capture mode provides the thinnest measured reading at the end of a continuous scan. An auto-freeze function, which minimizes the probe’s surface contact time, is used for measuring structures and components with hot surfaces.
 
Inspection of Forgings 
The instrument’s Phantom Echo Detection technology is used in the inspection of fine grained and long work pieces to ensure accurate detection of flaws but not Ghost Echoes.
 
Inspection of Special Materials

Two Models for Flexibility and Compatibility

Options for Comfortable Navigation

In order to accommodate different user needs and preferences, the EPOCH 600 is available in two hardware configurations: one with an adjustment knob and the other with a navigation area on the keypad. The adjustment knob and the arrow keys on the navigation pad are responsible for parameter adjustment and value slewing.

Knob

The adjustment knob on the EPOCH 600 is used along with the CHECK and ESC keys to adjust parameter values in either coarse or fine increments. You have the ability to lock the knob to prevent accidental parameter value changes during an inspection. This configuration provides smooth value slewing for customers who prefer adjusting parameters using a knob. The knob configuration is designed to meet the requirements of IP66.

Navigation Pad

The EPOCH 600 navigation pad is a hallmark feature of the EPOCH flaw detectors. The up and down arrows on the navigation pad are used for coarse parameter adjustment, and the left and right arrows for fine adjustment. The navigation pad also contains additional functions and frequently used parameters such as gain, save, and the CHECK and ESC keys. The navigation pad configuration is designed to meet the requirements of IP67.

The Masterscan's enclosure is constructed using automotive grade impact resistant materials, offering excellent water resistance. Explosive Testing MIL810-G standards have been passed, together with environmental testing which has confirmed the instrument fully functioning at temperatures above 55°C. The Masterscan series has a colour transflective VGA display and maximum readability is achieved through adjustable brightness and the choice of 9 colour palettes, including a black-on-white LCD emulation mode.

Gate Monitor:Two independent gates for measurement and monitoring. Start and width fully adjustable over the entire range of the instrument. Levels adjustable from 0% to 100%, positive or negative triggering on each gate with audible & visual alarms. Gate resolution is 5nS.
Zoom:Expands range and delay to cover the area set by Gate 1 start & width controls.
AGC:Automatic Gain Control automatically sets the signal in Gate 1 to a level between 10% and 90% FSH, tolerance between 5% and 20%.
Measurement Modes:
Mode 1:Signal Monitor, Gate Alarms can be active but no measurements are displayed.
Mode 2:Depth and amplitude of first signal in gate.
Mode 3:Echo-Echo distance measurements.
Mode 4:Trigonometric display of beam-path, surface distance (including X-offset) and depth of indication from the inspection surface together with echo amplitude. Curved surface correction can be applied for convex and concave surfaces. Half-skip can be indicated on screen.
Mode 5:Gate to Gate distance measurement
Mode 6:Flank to Flank
Mode 7:Beam Angle, calculated from beampath, hole radius and hole center depth
Measurement Display:Live display and updates on screen at 10 times per second. Large display of a single measurement available.
Waveform Smoothing Select from:
  1. None (both min and max values are displayed in the A-Scan)
  2. Fill (Min values set to baseline value, produces a solid A-Scan)
  3. Smooth (min values ignored, produces a clear outline)
Auto-Cal:Provides automatic calculation of velocity and probe zero from 2 reference echoes. Automatic calibration with two echoes.
Reference Waveform:Displays a previously stored A-log in a color different from the active display: enabling a quick visual check of the differences.
Clock:Built-in battery backed RTC keeps time and date. Visible on the status line, always stored with Panels, A-logs, etc.
Internal Memory:4GB storage available for A-Scans, panels, T-logs, B-logs, etc. 450,000 Panels, 200,000 A-Logs, 300,000 B-Charts, 440,000 T-Logs.
Active Peak Memory:Retains all A-Scans on screen for echo-dynamic pattern analysis, with the active A-Scan displayed in a separate color.
Notes:Alphanumeric labelling for panel stores, A-logs, B-logs, etc.

The Sitescan 500s offers the end user an entry level broad band flaw detector with full VGA display, sync and proportional outputs and a 50nS (Spike) 200V Pulser. High levels of near surface resolution, penetrating power and excellent signal to noise ratio are key functions in the Sitescan range. The 500S has a color transflective VGA display, providing high visibility in any lighting condition and the enhanced user interface and full A-Scan display is available at the touch of a button. The 500S enclosure is constructed using impact resistant materials and is designed to meet IP67 standards, offering excellent water resistance and harsh conditions.
